Cork Dulcimer Fest - June 27, 2003

"It's tail-waggin' good!"

We got up about 9:30AM or so on Friday.  After breakfast, I checked my tuning and headed down to the Cork Vision Centre to promote the festival.  The weather was great, a bit cool, but sunny, which was a nice change from the afternoon before.  I started playing about 11:45AM.  Butch Ross joined me a bit later, and we played for a while.  That was great fun!  Some others from the festival came by, but not to play.  A few people came by and asked about the dulcimer and took flyers, but there weren't nearly as many people on the street in general as I remember there being last year.  I quit playing about 2:45PM, and went back to the apartments, ate lunch, and took a nap to prepare for those late-night sessions that were sure to come.  Here are pictures of Butch and I playing at the Cork Vision Centre:

Supper was at Christie's apartment and was good fun and food.  Afterwards, we headed down to An Spailpin Fanach (The Roving Gypsy) pub on Main Street for the opening event - a concert with Adrian Schofield and Jenny Coxon (Northumbrian Pipes and Hammered Dulcimer), and with Dan Evans (Lap Dulcimer), all from the UK.  Adrian and Jenny returned after being there last year, but Dan was new to the festival, playing, as he does, "that other dulcimer".  A very entertaining night.  Adrian and Jenny were their usual entertaining selves, and Dan's songs and playing were a treat.  And here are pictures of said concert:

And, of course, a session followed the concert.

Saturday was workshop day, so I gave up early so I wouldn't fall asleep in class.  However, I ended staying up until about 1:45AM talking with John Burns, Nikki Palun and Brandy, solving the world's problems.  Nikki is a young woman from Australia who lives in Co. Clare now.  She was at the festival last year, and bought a dulcimer from John after the festival, learned to play, and now does quite well busking.  As I said, I did finally give up for real about 1:45AM.
